Why Slim Digital Cameras are All the Rage

by GeekGirl on Apr.09, 2009, under Picture Geek

Innovations are the keys to success in any endeavor, and the realm of cameras is no exception. Slim digital cameras set the standards for both photographic quality and usability for the everyday user. What you, a regular Joe, needs is a mechanism that allows you to capture a moment of time while being given the capacity to do so easily and conveniently.

This is why Slim digital cameras will allow you to do just that:

• Slim Means Compact
Let’s say you want to take a picture. Imagine yourself having to carry around a 4 or 5 foot-high tripod, a bulky camera that weighs the same as your head, and a black sheet to cover you as you take a picture. Not very practical, is it?

When the beauty of a sunset or a happy moment in your life comes to pass, you don’t need to lug around a massive camera around with you to be able to capture that moment in time. Slim digital cameras can be toted around in your purse or pocket, and you can whip it out in the blink of an eye when a shutter moment comes to you.

• Quality in a Compressed Package
Now just because Slim digital cameras are small doesn’t mean quality is sacrificed to such a degree that your picture will be a pixilated mess. With higher-end qualities that have high mega pixel counts, you have photos that are comparable (or even surpass) traditional analog cameras.

With the constant surge of technological advances, you can expect that these new digital cameras allow a normal person to have a powerful photographic device at their disposal. You won’t be given a choice between quality and usability: you’ll have both.

• Easy to Share
This is the biggest advantage that digital cameras have over their analog brethren: it’s easy to plug it up to your computer, a friend’s computer, a friend’s camera or even the internet. This gives the user an unprecedented amount of sharing power, allowing fast and virtually instantaneous transfer of pictures.

You can share your pictures with your next-door neighbor or loved ones thousands of miles away in a matter of seconds, and all because of the technological breakthroughs in compact and Slim digital cameras.

• Customizable Pictures
Photos in the digital format can be given a little extra something with a few special effects and tweaks. Take the red eyes out with a little editing, or add a nostalgic effect by taking a sepia-colored picture.

With this property of digital cameras, you’ll find a creative tool at your disposal that goes beyond the aesthetic changes that traditional analog cameras cannot offer.

You don’t need to wrack your brains or your wallet considering what options to take. If you want a small, powerful and convenient tool to use in order to capture precious moments into the stillness of a picture, then look no further than the features that Slim digital cameras have to offer. You’ll be getting the most bang for your buck, and you won’t regret your decision.

Using Digital Camera Optical Zoom

by GeekGirl on Apr.08, 2009, under Picture Geek

“Picture perfect” is the quality a customer would like to get out of his or her every day photo shots. Whether a first time snapper or an experienced professional, everyone looks for the capture that is perfectly clear and can last a lifetime.

Buying your camera can be confusing if you do not have any idea what features you can consider in finding the best one. Other than that, it can also be impractical if you do not have enough knowledge of what can best suit your needs and lifestyle.

Digital camera optical zoom is one of the most popular features in the world of digital cameras. Of course, you also need to consider the battery life, mega pixels, exposure control, and user-control, but the zooming feature is one of the essentials in taking pictures.

In general, the zooming effect magnifies the image, enabling the photographer, to take a closer shot of the subject that is further away without physically getting close to it. In addition, it also helps eliminate unnecessary background and focus to the subject without interruptions.

Digital cameras, however, have two types of zoom lenses: digital and optical. Digital lens digitally scales up the pixels but not the final image itself. This results to poor resolution and picture quality. On the other hand, this makes digital camera optical zoom more popular. With optical lens, you can bring the subject closer or further away, without reducing the number of pixels and damaging the image quality.

For professional photographers, carrying a gadget that has many features and functionality is a necessity. As taking pictures are their bread and butter, considering a camera that has higher resolutions and longer zoom range is their top priority. Moreover, because they are as busy as professionals always do, they do not want to spend so muich time editing and resizing. They want the picture as perfect as the actual even if they snap it with shaking hands or while on the go. Digital camera optical zoom offers the longest zoom range of up to 18x without compromising the quality of the image. It is therefore perfect for any photography jobs.

Nevertheless, in finding the best one, you will also need to consider your purpose and your budget. Digital camera optical zoom may be a little more expensive than the digital zoom. But then, even if you only intend to use it for your scrapbooks, seeing a photo that has a more realistic and color-rich background is truly satisfying. The fact that you are capturing an image for a long lasting memorabilia, it is but essential that you get a camera for all-time use!

Blurry pictures can become too disgusting especially if you do not intend to use it for special effects. Regardless whether you are a professional or an amateur, you want to see a clear and colorful outcome of your work. If you have the means, why settle for less? Digital camera optical zoom can last for a lifetime and you will surely value and treasure its every shot.

Canon Elph Digital Camera – Why Size Matters For Digital Cameras

by GeekGirl on Apr.06, 2009, under Generally Geeky, Picture Geek

You may have probably heard of the ancient saying: size matters. Well, that saying was invented back in the day when bigger meant better. But in today’s ultra-compact and miniaturized society, big has become equated to bulky, wasteful and expensive. The same applies for digital cameras.

Smaller digital cameras, like the Canon Elph digital camera, have become the trend for picture taking. And there are good reasons for it too:

Easy to Use

The main reason why smaller cameras like the Canon Elph digital camera are the new trend is because they’re user-friendly. You don’t need to memorize the manual on lens-selection, focusing, and film-selection to get the job done. A simple press of the button yields a picture that you can use right when you need it.

Although these user-friendly cameras aren’t as powerful or as specifically crafted as the more technical and professional cameras, you won’t be sacrificing much in terms of picture quality. Leave the professional gear to the professionals, and get the user-friendly versions if you don’t plan to make a career out of picture taking.

Easy to Store

Which is easier to store and carry around: a Canon Elph digital camera that is as wide as your hand and weighs as much, or a professional camera that’s as big as your head and weighs as much too?

If you’re a tourist or travel a lot, you may want to keep things light. Weight and storability are major factors to consider for picture-taking purposes, and you definitely don’t want a heavy piece of electronics dangling down your neck as you trek through the jungles of some exotic island somewhere in the Pacific.

Easy to Share

Yet another advantage that cameras like the Canon elph digital cameras have is their ability to hook up to computers and other image-storing devices. Such images can then be easily shared through flash drives, memory sticks or the Internet to those whom you’d want to share the pictures with.

It’s a definite improvement over having to send a bunch of pictures by mail to those who you’d want to share them with. Not only is it less time consuming, but it’s also much cheaper as well: imagine the costs of having to develop a few dozen pictures for your family. That’s definitely nothing to sneeze at.

Easy to Add Features

One thing that sets a Canon Elph digital camera apart is the ability to edit and add features to the photo-taking experience: you add a sepia touch to a scene to add a little old-style feel to it, or you can opt for a more striking effect by enriching the colors to a picture.

With the ability to manipulate colors and effects, you’re now given the ability to add a little creative touch to the pictures you take. You can make a scenic shot more dramatic, or you can make a night-shot more vibrant and visible. It’s up to you and your creative juices.

These smaller cameras which are easier to use, store, share and add features are a definite improvement over their larger, more ancient cousins. Thus, size really doesn’t matter: it’s what’s inside that counts.

Editing Photos in Picnic

by GeekGirl on May.30, 2008, under Picture Geek

I can edit graphics no problem in Macromedia Fireworks, and sometimes I’ll use Gimp …. can’t seem to get the hang of using Photoshop as much though. Anyhow, photograph editing always sort of stumps me a little. I love my flickr account and recently they added the ability to use Picnik right from your flickr page. Very cool, and I think very smart move for flickr. I’ve been playing around with it a little when I add photos to my account.

BEFORE:
mmm yummy apple

AFTER:
mmm yummy apple

So, how did I do? Maybe in the fall I’ll upgrade to Premium Picnik to get some of the additional features too! There are some really cool effects in there. All you need is one click too, as opposed to spending an hour in photoshop playing with settings and gizmos. Picnik is easy. I like things that are easy.

still getting used to my new camera

by GeekGirl on Apr.15, 2008, under Picture Geek

I love my camera, I really do, I’m just not used to using it yet. I’ve been trying to snap a few pics every day to try to get used to the settings and the flash and all the goodies. But, like always, my memory stinks and I usually forget. Or you end up with a lot of pictures of the cat because he’s the only thing that will hold still long enough other than a piece of fruit….

without flash:
new casual melamie platic whatever it's called dishes from Target

with flash:
new casual melamie platic whatever it's called dishes from Target

without flash, but it was sunny:
zoned out....

lights out and candles lit:
happy 11th birthday Dylan

fidgety squirmy little boys give me blurred pics like this even with the image stabilizing feature:
happy 11th birthday Dylan

So…. I’m not quite a pro at taking pics yet obviously! I need more practice so there will be much snapping of the shutter and lots of pictures of inanimate objects in the future. Please point me towards your photo blogs, tips, and other photo taking goodness…

Disney Pix Camera

by GeekGirl on Mar.08, 2008, under Kids Geekery, Picture Geek

My 9 year old son Lucas got a camera last weekend when we went to Best Buy. He’s been wanting one for awhile and after all his hard work to get on the honor roll how could I say no? Besides that he had a shiny Best Buy gift card just burning holes in his pockets. He is so in love with his little camera, he took hundreds of pictures with it already.

disney camera pix pirates of the caribbean

If I recall correctly the Disney Pix Max Pirates of the Carribean III Digital Camera holds 200 pictures, and he’s emptied it twice already and it has pictures on it again, and it’s almost full and ready to empty yet again.

I made a folder on my flickr account for some of his pictures, titled By Lucas. That gives me two little budding photographers now, Dylan and Lucas both have their very own cameras.

His first picture he took with the camera was a self portrait;
first picture - self portrait!

He spent an entire day taking pictures of Ethan and testing things out since Ethan is a little ham and doesn’t mind;
mmm juicebox

And then off to the park to show off his new camera to his friends and get some pics;
you lookin' at me?

The pictures taken outside definitely come out better than the ones he takes in the house. They aren’t going to take great wedding photos for your scrapbook, but for a 9 year old that just wants to snap pics of his friends and pets it’s pretty darn good!

Who knew that three little megapixels could bring such joy? Lucas is happy he has a camera to call his own, I’m happy it didn’t cost me a small fortune! So far I’m happy with the purchase as I am with most Disney gear purchases. It’s got a tough case, it came with everything he needed, and it even includes a kid friendly easy to use photo editing program, which we haven’t played with yet. You can use the program to add borders and Disney characters to your pictures so that should be fun for the boys to use.

I’ve read a lot of mixed reviews about these little Disney gadgets online. I’ll admit he has only had the camera for a week, so I can’t say that it’s going to last forever, but then again I don’t expect it to last anywhere near forever either. It’s basically a hi-tech toy. I’ve read a lot of places saying they are for pampered little rich kids with lots of money to spend. Sorry, my kids are not pampered, and we certainly don’t have a lot of money to spend! Far from it. Gees, it’s not like I bought him a new car for goodness sakes, it’s an inexpensive little camera for him to have some fun with. Remember fun?
