Blizzard Entertainment announced recently that the amount of World of Warcraft (WoW) players is now more than 10 million players. The breakdown of where those players come from is what’s most interesting to me.
Over 2 million players are from Europe, 2.5 million players from north America and 5.5 Million from Asia. WoW started in the end of 2004 and is now on of the most popular online game ever.
The in game rumors say that Asian players are the best of the best and take the gaming experience the most seriously. I’m not sure what prompts that stereotype … maybe they are more serious than we are about their video game experience, or maybe we’re just too easily distracted by other things.
I’m sure economy has an impact on the number of players from a region as well. For a lot of people the $15 a month fee to play is just too much to squeeze into the budget. It was a definitely a large factor in my turning my account off several months ago. I just turned the account back on for my oldest son to be able to play again, we got him some game cards for Christmas to fund the account with. I still haven’t gone back to playing yet myself. I’m not sure what it is that has me turned off about it, I just don’t feel like playing anymore and I haven’t for months.
